The biggest weekend on the Australian sporting Calendar is upon us and the 2019 AFL Grand Final the culmination of another great year of Australian Rules Football. Over the last 24 hours there’s been one amazing story that I’m sure has even been of interest to the non footballing spectator, if there is one. Marlion Pickett will make his first senior AFL appearance in this Saturday’s season decider. A feat that only six other individuals have experienced in the history of our game, the last being Collingwood’s Keith Batchelor in 1952. What makes this feat even more incredible is that Pickett played his first game for the Richmond VFL side (his new club) in round 18 after a debilitating injury delayed his start with the Tigers.

The 27 year olds football journey is one of the great football stories. Pickett, who served a jail term in his teens for burglary has used football, the people and clubs involved, to get his life back on the rails. The father of four and his amazing story is for me the most remarkable chapter of season 2019 so far.

Marlion Pickett will ride in todays AFL motorcade with his 4 children; his parents will fly to Melbourne (his father petrified of flying) and his words “I just never give up my dreams. Grand Final selection is a big achievement. Not just for me but for my family as well. My family’s been with me, through thick and thin. This means a lot”.

Who can’t love the football!

The Lorne property market traditionally welcomes Saturday’s final siren as much as the team that looks to hold the Holy Grail aloft. The weekend signals the end of the footy season and start of the Lorne “holiday” season. With the increase in numbers returning to Lorne comes increased demand for both property for sale and holiday accommodation as our teams prepare for the months ahead.

With the results of the past month, the increasing buoyancy in both the Melbourne and Geelong market, the low interest rates and stability of Government, we are better positioned Grand Final Weekend 2019 than any previous year of the past five. With a couple of new listings going on-line and a few more ”discussions” underway, the lead up to Cup Weekend will be a telling period for what sits ahead.

One of the best social functions of the year is Grand Final Day at the A Team. The Lorne Angling and Aquatic Club host members and visitors alike with their famous “A Team hospitality”. Make sure you are there for the first bounce.

“Someday is not a day of the week”.
