Our Backyard

There’s a fair bit happening around Lorne with holiday dates dominating the balance of April. This weekend our local footballers and netballers travel to Irrewillipe for round 1 of Colac and District Football League season as the Dolphins prepare for the defence of their 2018 Premiership, but that’s not all of what is happening this weekend. At 8am tomorrow the Lorne Beach Parkrun is launched for the first time. This great initiative is a 5km run, jog or walk – its you against the clock and its going to happen every Saturday at 8am. The event starts at the Lorne Surf Club and encompasses a course mixture of concrete paths, trail paths and sand. The event is free but you must register online first (you only have to register once). Go to www.parkrun.com.au to register and don’t forget to take a copy of your barcode with you on Saturday morning – good luck!

The most asked question across my desk since Tuesday has been “what does the budget signal for the real estate market?” Always a really hard call to forecast, but I think its fair to say that the Budget Surplus promises will be a boost to general sentiment in the property sector as confidence feeds off policies and promises. According to experts there are no wild cards for the property market, but instead an undertone of stability and sustainability through job creation and a $100 billion infrastructure spend, both of which will underpin the property market throughout the country.

According to Treasurer Josh Frydenberg (whose family have a home in Lorne) the big winners are regional markets with a focus on regional infrastructure spend, while the losers are the first home buyers with nothing in particular for them in the financial stimulus.

In my view this all equals to a real positive for the Lorne market where general sentiment and confidence has been the only thing lacking and I think we will look back with accuracy to confirm the line in the sand was drawn in January 2019.

A strange year with dates this year as school holidays officially start today. Good Friday is now only two weeks away and Anzac Day five days later. Fair to say an intensive holiday period ahead to round out one of our best holiday periods for generations.
