Our Backyard

Gotta say that the last couple of weeks have really driven home the risks that are “part and parcel” of living in bushfire prone areas like the Otways. It doesn’t matter whether you are a permanent resident property owner, a holiday home owner, a renter or just a part time Lorne visitor. It is incumbent on us all to be doing our bit to ensure our homes and surrounds are made as “fire friendly” as they can possibly be. The NSW and Queensland fires have highlighted the dangers that exist when fuel levels are not critically managed and we must ensure our environment is well prepared for the fire season ahead, and the pre-Christmas period is the last opportunity you have to prepare.

Next February will be the 39th anniversary of Ash Wednesday bushfires and having been actively involved in the devastation that hammered our coast and hinterland through a terrifying 24-hour period, I like many other long-time local people realise only too well the need to aggressively manage our fuel levels. Forest Fire Management Victoria have done some great work over the cooler months and now it’s up to us to “build on” and reinforce these same principals within our back yard! With the start of summer less than 10 days away and most accommodation providers reporting large increases in pre-booked accommodation for the January and February holiday season, the year is shaping as a bumper, and the real estate space will be “just as interesting!”

This time, twelve months ago, the local market was charging towards the closure of 2018 with enormous strength and we were all optimistic that January and February would see the strength continue – how wrong we were as we “limped” through the quietest January in the history of our company. I’ve shared it before, that post Federal Election our lifestyle buyers have had more “spring in their step” than prior to and like the corresponding time last year, our pre-Christmas six months have been good.

With a small section of quality stock poised to be launched to the market over the coming month, we again are optimistic that our summer market will rise above levels to where it sat twelve months ago – but then again that would not be hard!
