Our Backyard – Lorne

After a big week of grand finals across two national sporting codes that saw Victorian teams reign supreme even while playing interstate, it’s fair to say that the floodgates are about to open. Under current COVID guidelines the Victorian State of Emergency is scheduled to end at 11:59pm on the 8th of November. And at this same time, it’s expected that the “ring of steel” will come down and enable the Melbourne population to travel to Victorian regional areas, and you can bet that’s exactly what will happen.
Since the Daniel Andrews announcement last weekend of the pending removal of movement restrictions, our online accommodation enquiries have been running red hot and phones have been ringing off the hook.  If the current trends are any indication, the run into Christmas is going to be way bigger than any other year and pave the way for the Lorne community to largely dodge the harshest economic impact of the pandemic given the time it struck!

Over the past week I have had multiple discussions with people in the property industry around current trends. Yesterdays chat with a journalist from Domain revealed how the market on the Mornington Peninsula, Portsea and Sorrento were tracking similar to the upward Lorne trend. Properties on the sunshine coast are being purchased sight unseen and property owners in Port Douglas are receiving direct calls from agents on behalf of curious buyers.

The regional and leisure markets are experiencing exceptionally strong demand as a result of COVID and this is likely to go to another level as the “ring of steel” comes down!

The last week on the home front here in Lorne, has produced a couple of solid results that have been contracted and a sprinkling of new listings that have generated great enquiry numbers the moment they hit the internet. Over the coming months, as Melbourne buyers return, it’s going to be a very interesting indicator for 2021 – stay tuned!

Kind regards,
